+1 score in golf NYT Mini crossword clue
Editorially reviewed September 8, 2026
Answer · 5 letters
BOGEY
BOGEY is the five-letter answer. In this clue, +1 means one stroke above the hole's par, not one stroke in total or a one-point bonus. For example, taking five strokes on a par-four hole makes a bogey.

A hole's par is the baseline for this notation. On a par-four hole, four strokes is par and five is +1. On a par-three hole, four strokes is +1. The total changes, but the name for one over par remains the same.
A birdie goes in the other direction
The PGA glossary defines a birdie as one stroke under par, or -1. A double bogey is two over par, or +2. The sign and amount in the clue therefore matter: +1 selects BOGEY, even if another golfing word fits some crossings.
